Happy Birthday Entropy Data 🎉

On June 24, 2025, Entropy Data GmbH was entered into the German commercial register. That is our official founding day, as a spin-off from INNOQ. One year on, we are bootstrapped, profitable, and growing, with customers across three continents. Time to blow out a candle and look back at everything that happened since (we shared more detail along the way in our 2025 in review).

From INNOQ to Entropy Data

From consultants to founders

Entropy Data started as a spin-off from INNOQ: two consultants turning the Data Mesh Manager, already in productive use with customers, into a company of its own, co-founded by Dr. Simon Harrer (CEO) and Jochen Christ (CTO).

That was the starting line. Everything below is what we did with our first year of independence.

A new name and a clearer shape for the platform

Entropy Data Marketplace

In October 2025, Data Mesh Manager became Entropy Data, a new name for the same mission of bringing order to data chaos. We redesigned the platform into three areas built around the people who use them:

  • Marketplace: for data consumers to discover data products and request access
  • Studio: for data product owners and developers to create, edit, and monitor data products
  • Governance: for stewards and platform teams to define policies, manage access, and stay compliant

Building in the open

As members of the Bitol Technical Steering Committee at the Linux Foundation, we helped push ODCS 3.1 (Open Data Contract Standard) and ODPS 1.0 (Open Data Product Standard) to release, and deprecated our own Data Contract Specification in favor of the open standards. In June 2026, we joined the Open Semantic Interchange (OSI) to help bring a vendor-neutral standard to business semantics, and we already support the OSI 0.2.0-draft.

A product that kept shipping

Our roadmap stayed packed all year. Among the highlights:

  • First tool to natively support ODCS 3.1 and ODPS 1.0, and gearing up for ODCS 3.2 and ODPS 1.1, releasing soon
  • Data Product Builder: contract-driven development for data products, where you write or extend an ODCS data contract, then let Claude Code, OpenAI Codex, or GitHub Copilot CLI implement it
  • Semantics: model your business domain as an ontology of concepts and relationships, grounded in data products and data contracts
  • Power BI as a first-class citizen, extending lineage, semantics, ownership, and governance into your reports
  • MCP integration: chat with your enterprise data in natural language, with full governance
  • Native connectors for BigQuery, Databricks, Snowflake, and PostgreSQL, plus drift detection and Git integration

Research and a strong security foundation

The team behind it all

We started as four and have grown to six. A warm welcome to André Deuerling and Michael Kutz, who joined us this year. And above all, thank you to our families. None of this would have been possible without your patience and support. ❤️

To our customers, partners, the open standards communities, and everyone who has cheered us on: thank you for an incredible first year. Here's to the next one.
